HPI (historically Hobby Products International) is a legendary brand founded in 1986 in California by Tatsuro Watanabe. While it is globally iconic as a powerhouse for top-tier radiografisch bestuurbare auto’s (RC cars), the brand carved out a golden era in the mid-2000s by producing some of the absolute highest-quality 1:43 scale static die-cast models the hobby has ever seen.
Today, the company operates with two distinct identities across the RC and static collector markets.
Between roughly 2006 and 2013, HPI expanded into the premium static display market. Collectors still consider these models a benchmark because they offered details that far surpassed competitors like Minichamps and AUTOart at the time. HPI focused heavily on classic World Rally Championship (WRC) cars, Japanese touring champions, and iconic endurance endurance racers.
HPI eventually halted its static 1:43 die-cast division to return focus to its core RC roots. However, the expert design team behind HPI's highly successful 1:43 line went on to form Ignition Model, which remains one of Japan's most premium high-end resin model brands today.
