DS can be an abbreviation and it also refers to the Citroën DS . The name is also a play on words, as in French it is pronounced like the word déesse, meaning "goddess".

DS Automobiles is a premium automotive marque born in Paris and founded in 2009. Formerly part of Citroën, DS has been a standalone brand since. By launching the DS line, Groupe PSA decided to build on the design heritage of the original Citroën DS (1955–1975) by Flaminio Bertoni and André Lefèbvre.  DS partnered with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Racing team for the second season of the FIA Formula E Championship.

The Citroën DS is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive executive car that was manufactured  from 1955 to 1975. Not a frenchman but an italian drew the DS. And not only the DS but also the traction avant, 2cv, ami and the HY were drawn by Flaminio Bertoni. His steak in the image of citroën was bigger than the more welknown designer Robert Opron.

Citroën sold only 1.45 milion DS cars in 20 years while renault sold more R16 in just 15 years.

By launching the DS line, Groupe PSA decided to build on the design heritage of the original Citroën DS (1955–1975) by Flaminio Bertoni and André Lefèbvre. The DS line started with the Citroën DS3 in the beginning of 2010, a small car based on the floorpan of the new C3.  It was named 2010 Car of the Year by Top Gear Magazine.

The DS series is deeply connected to Citroën, as the DS4, launched in 2010, is based on the 2008 Citroën Hypnos concept car.
