VinFast is a LLC private automotive startup manufacturer headquartered in Vietnam which opened in 2017, a member of the conglomerate organization Vingroup. It is the first Vietnamese car brand attempting to hit global markets.

The company was founded in 2017 by Vingroup. The company designed its models with the help of Pininfarina, BMW and Magna Steyr and participated in the 2018 Paris Motor Show. VinFast claims it will be the first volume automotive manufacturer in Vietnam as well as the first Vietnamese automaker to participate in a major international auto show.

VinFast broke ground in September 2017 on a 3,350,000 m2 facility in an industrial park located on Cat Hai Island near the city of Hai Phong. The factory with paint shop, press shop, assembly shop and engine shop was built in just 21 months .The investment is US$1.5 billion in the first phase of a program to make cars and electric motobikes at a greenfield factory on the facilities. The company claimed that it has aggregated talent from multiple established companies and is sourcing European design, engineering, and production technology partners. The first two vehicles that were shown at Paris motorshow in the fall of 2018 are the LUX SA2.0 and the LUX A2.0, designed by Pininfarina.

General Motors Vietnam Company, Ltd. (formerly Vietnam-Daewoo Motor Company Limited or VIDAMCO) is a defunct automobile manufacturer based in Vietnam and a member of GM Southeast Asia Operations. The company was officially established in December 1993 as a joint-venture between the Korean Daewoo Motor Corporation and the 7983 Mechanic Union Enterprise that was owned by the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense.

On 28 June 2018, General Motors (GM.N) has agreed to transfer its Vietnamese operation to VinFast Trading and Production LLC and distribute Chevrolet cars. The transfer, which includes GM's Hanoi plant, dealer network and employee base, is expected to be conducted by the end of 2018.

GM used its Hanoi plant to assemble Chevrolets with parts imported from South Korea - a country where the U.S. automaker came close to bankruptcy as it struggled to turn around its debt-laden unit. GM Korea is GM's biggest production base in Asia excluding China. The plant will be used solely to produce VinFast cars after the transfer, while Chevrolet cars will be imported.

VinFast will assume ownership of the GM Hanoi factory, and will implement a significant investment program to build an all-new, global small car licensed from GM and manufactured and sold under the VinFast brand.

With a vision of becoming the “leading vehicle manufacturer in Southeast Asia,” VinFast is the first Vietnamese car company and is led by James DeLuca, Former Vice President of Manufacturing at General Motors.

The company has R&D and production facilities in Vietnam, yet most of the technology used for the cars VinFast plans to produce were found elsewhere. The company partnered with Siemens, Bosch, Magna International, Pininfarina, and BMW, among others.

The VinFast name doesn’t actually have anything to do with velocity. Instead, the Vin part stands for Vietnam, while the FAST part is a sort of an acronym. In Vietnamese, FAST stands for F (Phong Cach) - style, A (An Toan) - safety, S (Sang tao) - innovation, T (Tien Phong) - pioneer.

It seems Vinfast made a great impression on BMW executives as, after it revealed the VinFast plan to them, they agreed to sell licenses for building some of the cars with BMW technology.

This is really curious as I don’t really remember BMW selling its tech to outsiders who are ready to produce hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year ever before. However, it wasn’t all that simple. VinFast engineers will have their hands full in order to meet more stringent regulations. After all, VinFast will not use the latest BMW technology, but the tech from outgoing BMW vehicles -the F10 (5 Series) and the F15 (X5).
