The name HRT F1 team came from Hispania Racing F1 Team, a name chosen after José Ramón Carabante took full control of the team and renamed it after his company, Grupo Hispania.

HRT Formula 1 Team, formerly known as Campos Meta 1 and Hispania Racing, was a Spanish Formula One team founded by former driver Adrián Campos. It was sold to José Ramón Carabante before its debut in 2010, and then to investment group Thesan Capital in July 2011. It was the first Spanish team to race in Formula One; a previous effort known as "Bravo F1" failed to enter the sport in 1993.

The team was re-named to Hispania Racing F1 Team (HRT) ahead of their first race, with the name taken from Grupo Hispania. The team though was formally entered as HRT as its full name was rejected by the FIA. The team's headquarters were moved from Meta Image's offices Madrid to Grupo Hispania's offices in Murcia.

On 4 March 2010, the team confirmed Karun Chandhok as its second driver, and immediately announced that it would change its name to Hispania Racing F1 Team.

Continued financial struggles led to an announcement from the owners in November 2012 that they were looking to sell the team. When that attempt ultimately failed before the deadline of 30 November, the team was subsequently omitted from the 2013 entry list. The team subsequently also went into liquidation, with carbon fibre supplier Formtech being one of the companies that HRT owed money to.

F110

The Hispania F110, also known as the HRT F110, is a Formula One motor racing car designed and built by Dallara for Hispania Racing, for the 2010 season. It was driven by Karun Chandhok, Bruno Senna, Christian Klien and Sakon Yamamoto and was unveiled in Murcia, Spain, on 4 March 2010.

It was the first car Hispania Racing entered in Formula One.

The car used a Cosworth engine throughout the course of the 2010 season, of which it competed in every race with two of the four drivers who raced it.

The team scored no points with the car during the season and gained the highest result of fourteenth place. This was scored by both Chandhok and Senna and meant that the team were placed eleventh and second-last in the 2010 World Constructors' Championship standings.

The F110 was liveried in dark grey, with a white, yellow and red stripe running down each sidepod and meeting at the nosecone.

The car had no title sponsor, with small stickers for Embratel, the Banco Cruzeiro do Sul and the Murcia tourist board. The sidepods were liveried with the drivers' first names.

Hispania's successor for their 2011 season campaign, the F111, was largely based upon the F110. Hispania used the F110 in pre-season testing for the 2011 season, and continued to do so until the new car, designed by Willis and featuring a Williams hydraulic system, was completed.

F111

The Hispania F111, also known as the HRT F111, is a Formula One racing car developed for Hispania Racing. The car competed in the 2011 Formula One season and was the first Formula One car designed by the team as HRT's entry into the 2010 season, the F110, was designed by Dallara.

Although Gary Anderson described the F110 at its inauguration as "neat and tidy", it was in fact an underdeveloped package without any testing due to financial rumblings within the team.

Throughout 2011, the F111 was driven by Narain Karthikeyan, Vitantonio Liuzzi and Daniel Ricciardo.

Again for financial reasons, the team chose to keep the same monocoque to be able to skip some of the crash tests.

When the car was then finally shipped to the final pre-season test at Barcelona, HRT called off the single testing day as its dampers got stuck in customs. As such, the F111 starts the season with 0 testing kilometers, just like the F110.

The car's development had a chequered history before it was even built, with an arrangement with the remains of Toyota Racing to give the team access to the abandoned TF110 project falling through before it could even be completed, with Toyota citing the uncertain financial condition of the team as the leading cause in the failed joint venture.

The F111 completed its first timed lap in the last 10 minutes of the third practice session of the 2011 Australian Grand Prix, driven by Karthikeyan. In qualifying later that day, the car failed to qualify within 107% of pacesetter Sebastian Vettel and was not allowed to start the race.

Hispania finished 11th in the World Constructors' Championship, ahead of Virgin.
