Ensign was founded by Morris Nunn who also carried out design duties during the first two seasons of the team's existence. Ensign is derived from N for Nunn, and sign,

Ensign was a Formula One constructor from Britain. They participated in 133 grands prix, entering a total of 155 cars. Ensign scored 19 championship points and no podium finishes. The best result was a 4th place at the 1981 Brazilian Grand Prix by Marc Surer, who also took fastest lap of the race.

Ensign entered Formula One in 1973, with backing from pay driver, Rikky von Opel.  Their first season was not successful, von Opel only finished two races.

After the 1982 season, Ensign was merged into the Theodore team, which it had previous ties to via financier Teddy Yip and took that team's name. The Theodore F1 team did not last the 1983 season, though, and shut down late in the year.

n177 1978

The Ensign N177 was a Formula 1 car built by the British team Ensign Racing for the 1977, 1978, and early 1979 seasons, powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine. It was a successor to the N176 and featured minor design changes, though it later received an uprated version with ground-effect tunnels in 1978. The N177 was Ensign's most successful model, scoring 11 points across two seasons and was driven by drivers including Clay Regazzoni and Nelson Piquet.

It was the primary car for Ensign Racing during the 1977 and 1978 seasons, and saw limited use in early 1979. The car was an evolution of the previous N176 chassis. A modified version with ground-effect tunnels was introduced in 1978, although it didn't significantly improve performance.

Derek Daly drove the N177 for the latter part of the 1978 season, famously scoring the team's only point with an 8th place finish in Canada.

Nelson Piquet made his Formula 1 debut in the N177 at the 1978 German Grand Prix.

The N177 was Ensign's most successful model, scoring a total of 11 championship points across the two seasons.

Teddy Yip's Theodore Racing team also used an N177 chassis, backed by Hong Kong real estate magnate Teddy Yip, who had supported Ensign since 1974.

n180

The Ensign N180 is a Formula One racing car built by the English team Ensign to compete in the 1980 Formula One World Championship.

Powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine, it was used for another two years, from the 1981 to 1982 season, in the updated Ensign N180B.

The 1980 season should have been the one of relaunch for the Ensign team, which had earned the economic support of Unipart.

Ensign fielded only one car, which debuted at the inaugural Argentine Grand Prix, where Regazzoni qualified fifteenth and finished the race nine laps behind Alan Jones due to various technical problems, not being classified.

Due to the lack of development of the car, the team managed to qualify for only three of the eight Grands Prix contested.

In the Dutch and Italian Grands Prix, the team fielded a second car driven by Geoff Lees, who at the beginning of the season had been indicated by the team as a regular driver alongside Regazzoni.

In 1981 the N180 was upgraded to the N180B and was entrusted to Marc Surer, who at the Brazilian Grand Prix achieved the best placement in the team's history, finishing the race in fourth place and also setting the fastest lap.
