Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a Swedish manufacturer of high-performance sports cars based in Ängelholm, Skåne County, Sweden.

The company was founded in 1994 in Sweden by Christian von Koenigsegg, with the intention of producing a "world-class" sports car. Many years of development and testing led to the CC8S, the company's first street-legal production car, which was introduced in 2002.

Christian von Koenigsegg got the idea to build his own car after watching the Norwegian stop-motion animated movie The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix in his youth. At 22 years old, Koenigsegg gathered kr 60,000,000 from investors and founded Koenigsegg Automotive in 1994.

Initially, Koenigsegg Automotive was based in Olofström. In the early 2000s, the company moved to Ängelholm. On 22 February 2003, one of the production facilities caught fire and was badly damaged. Koenigsegg then acquired an abandoned air field to use as his new factory building and in late 2003, one of the two large fighter-jet hangars and an office building were converted into a car factory. Since then, the company is located near the still-active Ängelholm airport. Koenigsegg controls and uses the former military runway for shakedown runs of production cars and high-speed testing.

In July 2023 Koenigsegg opened a newly built factory, close to the old factory building in Ängeholm, doubling the production capacity.

The Koenigsegg badge was designed in 1994 by Jacob Låftman, based on the heraldic coat of arms of the von Koenigsegg family. The shield has been the family's coat of arms since the 12th century when a family member was knighted by the Holy Roman Empire.

cc prototype

1994

The Koenigsegg CC is a prototype car made by the Swedish automobile manufacturer Koenigsegg.

Work on the car started in 1994. Koenigsegg wanted to build a sports car that could exceed the standards set by the McLaren F1 at the time, and achieve speeds over the 386 km/h (240 mph) set by the F1 in 1997. The design of the CC was inspired by the McLaren F1 along with the Ferrari F40. The car, initially painted silver, was then painted black when the new dihedral helix synchro actuation doors were fitted, and finally was painted its current colour. Other two prototypes included the white European spec prototype which was produced in 2000 and the other was a pre-production version of the CC8S, and was the first ever CC8S Koenigsegg produced.

The deal with Audi for the use of their 4.2 V8 fell flat after the car's designer, Christian von Koenigsegg, made clear his intent of tuning the V8 far beyond its standard output. The next candidate was the Flat-12 race engine developed by Motori Moderni for the Scuderia Coloni Formula One team, in which this engine was raced under the Subaru badge in the 1990 season. These Subaru 1235 engines were purchased and modified for use in the CC. This deal failed to materialise when the founder of Motori Moderni died, sending the company into bankruptcy. Following this, a deal was made with Ford for use of the Modular V8.

After moving into the abandoned airfield, which once housed a Swedish Air Force squadron, Koenigsegg adopted the "ghost symbol" that the squadron had on its planes as a tribute. The badge is seen on models built in the factory that was converted from its hangar.

On 12 June 2009, the media reported that Koenigsegg Group, consisting of Koenigsegg Automotive AB, Christian von Koenigsegg, Bård Eker and a group of investors led by Mark Bishop had signed a letter of intent with Saab to take over the brand from General Motors. General Motors confirmed on 16 June that they had chosen Koenigsegg Group as the buyer of Saab Automobile. The deal, set to close 30 September 2009, included US$600 million in financing from the European Investment Bank, guaranteed by the Swedish government. By comparison, in 2008 Koenigsegg with its staff of 45 produced 18 cars at an average price of US$1 million each; Saab employed 3,400 workers and made more than 93,000 cars.

General Motors announced on 18 August that the deal had been signed, although certain financing details remained to be completed. On 9 September 2009, Koenigsegg announced that BAIC was going to join as a minority stakeholder in Koenigsegg.

In November 2009, Koenigsegg decided not to finalise the purchase of Saab and therefore left the negotiations. Koenigsegg stated that its decision was due to the uncertain timing of finalisation of the takeover.

cc8s

2002-2003

The Koenigsegg CC8S is a mid-engine sports car produced by the Swedish automobile manufacturer Koenigsegg. It was the company's first production automobile and the first production car to use the company's trademark dihedral synchro-helix actuation doors. At its introduction, it won several awards, including the Guinness World Record for the Most Powerful Production Engine and design awards from both Red Dot in Germany and Utmärkt Svensk Form in Sweden.

The body is a two-door, two-seat targa top design, meaning a portion of the roof can be removed and stored under the bonnet. The chassis is made from kevlar-reinforced carbon fibre. The kevlar-reinforced carbon fibre semi-monocoque is attached to a steel subframe at the front of the chassis, and an aluminium subframe at the rear.

The CC8S is powered by a supercharged 4.7–litre DOHC V8 engine based on the Ford Modular design but made of cast aluminium with 4 valves per cylinder and carbon fibre covers weighing 210 kg. It produces 664 PS at 6800 rpm and 750 N⋅m of torque at 5000 rpm. The redline is set to 7250 rpm. The engine powers the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission specially developed for the car by CIMA.

Acceleration: 0–100 km/h is under 3.5 seconds and the topspeed is 390 km/h.

ccx

2006-2010

The Koenigsegg CCX is a mid-engine sports car manufactured by Swedish automotive manufacturer Koenigsegg Automotive AB. The project began with the aim of making a global car, designed and engineered to comply with global safety and environment regulations, particularly to enter the United States car market.

The name CCX is an abbreviation for Competition Coupé X, the X commemorating the 10th anniversary (X being the Roman numeral for ten) of the completion and test drive of the first CC prototype in 1996.

The CCX was unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, sporting body modifications to meet US vehicle regulations and a new in-house developed 4.7L twin supercharged V8 engine capable of generating a maximum power output of 817 PS at 7000 rpm and 920 N⋅m of torque at 5500 rpm while running on 91 octane gasoline.

Available transmissions are a CIMA 6-speed manual and a 6-speed sequential manual transmission. Power is fed to the wheels through a torque-sensitive limited slip differential.

agera

2010-2018

The Koenigsegg Agera is a mid-engine sports car produced by Swedish car manufacturer Koenigsegg. It is a successor to the CCX/CCXR. The name comes from the Swedish verb 'agera' which means "to act" or in imperative form "(You) act".

In early development, the car was fitted with a 4.7-litre V8 engine with fixed-vane twin-turbochargers, but the engine was replaced with an in-house developed 5.0-litre V8 engine and fitted with twin-turbochargers which generates a maximum power output of 706 kW  at 6900 rpm and 1100 N⋅m of torque at 4000 rpm.

The total weight of the engine is only 197 kg due to a carbon fibre inlet manifold and aluminium construction.

The transmission is a specially developed CIMA 7-speed dual-clutch with paddle shifters. It is the first dual-clutch transmission to feature only one input shaft. The second clutch slows down the input shaft during up shifts in order to reduce the time it takes to synchronise the next gear, resulting in faster shift times. Most notably, the transmission weighs only 81 kg.

0–100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. 0–200 km/h in 8.0 seconds.

2011-2014

2013-2014

2014-2015

The Agera R made its debut at the March 2011 Geneva Motor Show with a Speed Racer livery, and special Michelin tyres. It can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and attain a theoretical top speed of 439 km/h (273 mph). The Agera R has a drag coefficient of Cd=0.37, or Cd=0.33 at high speed due to its adaptive rear wing, while producing 300 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. This adaptive rear wing system is lighter than conventional hydraulic/electrical adaptive systems, and has the unique ability to compensate for head/tailwind due to its spring-loaded design.

Koenigsegg presented the Agera S model in 2013. Built for markets lacking E85 biofuel, the Agera S has most of the upgrades of the Agera R compared to the normal Agera including the dynamic wing, but is optimised for running on low-octane petrol generating a maximum power output of 1,030 PS and 1100 N⋅m of torque compared to the 960 PS and 1,100 N⋅m of torque of an Agera R running on the same fuel. In 2013, one Agera S was the 100th Koenigsegg ever produced, celebrated by a specially-built car with gold leaf inlays named "Hundra" (Swedish for "one hundred").

The Koenigsegg One:1 was presented at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show held in March. Koenigsegg built six cars apart from the car presented at the Geneva Motor Show, all of which were already sold.

The car is fitted with a variant of the same 5.0 L twin-turbocharged V8 engine used in the other Agera variants. It generates a maximum power output of 1,360 PS at 7500 rpm and 1,371 N⋅m of torque at 6000 rpm. The transmission is a 7-speed dual clutch paddle shift as used in other variants of the Agera.

The name One:1 comes from the power-to-weight ratio (1360 PS to 1360 kg) giving the car 1 PS per 1 kg mass.

agera final edition

2015-2018

2016-2018

The Agera RS was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, along with the prototype version of the Regera. The Agera RS is an advanced version of the Agera R, implementing some of the new technology and features of the One:1 and combining the features of the Agera R and the Agera S.

The 5.0-litre V8 engine now has a power output of 1176 PS  on regular pump gasoline. The optional 1-megawatt package increases the engine's power to 1360 PS. 27 units of the Agera RS were built. The model was initially going to be limited to 25 units, however two extra cars were built, one being the factory development car and one as a replacement for a customer car damaged while it was being used for shakedown testing (Agera RS Phoenix built after the crash of Agera RS Gryphon). Each Agera RS could be fully customised by its owner.

At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, a final three-car series of the Agera was announced as a final celebration of the Agera range and as the last models to wear the Agera badge. The cars could be fully customised and combined with the Agera RS chassis with the One:1 engine.

The first car to be unveiled was called the 'One of One'. It featured a unique orange paint scheme with bare carbon and blue accents. The other two distinct final edition cars were unveiled online in July 2018 and were called 'Agera FE Thor' and 'Agera FE Väder' respectively. Thor features a custom two-tone black paintwork consisting of crushed diamonds and white accents. Väder features the same crushed diamond paintwork with a bare carbon fibre centre along with white accents, incorporating the same rear wing as Thor but excludes the central fin.

regera

2016-2022

The Koenigsegg Regera is a limited production, plug-in hybrid grand touring sports car manufactured by Swedish automotive manufacturer Koenigsegg. It was unveiled at the March 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The name Regera is a Swedish verb, meaning "to reign" or "to rule". Koenigsegg produced 85 Regeras, most of which were sold upon unveiling.

The Regera was developed and designed to be a more practical, luxurious, grand touring alternative to the rest of Koenigsegg's lightweight sports car lineup: initially the Agera and later the Jesko. Consequently it is focused on the smooth and instant delivery of power provided by its overhauled powertrain, rather than on-track performance.

The Regera is a two-door targa top with a detachable roof that can be stowed in the boot. It is the first hybrid car to be produced by Koenigsegg, as well as the first vehicle to use their Direct-Drive System for power delivery.

The Regera has a reported total power output of 1822 PS through a hybrid powertrain. As in general, the Regera's internal combustion engine (ICE) generates its greatest power only at high rpm; however, due to the fixed gear, this corresponds to very high speeds. Power at low speeds is filled in by the electric motors, giving a maximum combined mechanical power output of 1521 PS and 2000 N⋅m of torque.

Koenigsegg states it is capable of accelerating to 100 km/h from a stand still in 2.8 seconds, 200 km/h in 6.6 seconds, 300 km/h in 10.9 seconds and attaining a speed of 400 km/h in 20 seconds.

jesko

2021-now

The Koenigsegg Jesko is a limited production mid-engine sports car produced by the Swedish automobile manufacturer Koenigsegg. The car was introduced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and was completely sold out before the show ended. Succeeding the Agera, the Jesko is named as a tribute to the company founder's father, Jesko von Koenigsegg. There are two variations of the car, the "Absolut" and the "Attack".

The engine is a development of the 5.1 L twin-turbocharged V8 engine used in the Agera. The engine has a power output of 1298 PS at 7800 rpm and 1,000 N⋅m  of torque at 2700 to 6170 rpm on normal petrol and has a power output of 1622 PS and 1500 N⋅mof torque at 5100 rpm on E85 biofuel.

The engine is mated to an in-house developed 9-speed multi-clutch transmission called the "Light Speed Transmission (LST)" by the manufacturer.

Production of the Jesko will be limited to 125 units, with 40–50 units being produced each year. Unlike its predecessors, the Jesko will be homologated worldwide. It was announced in March 2019 that all the build slots of the Jesko were sold out.

gemera

2024-now

The Koenigsegg Gemera is a limited production four-seat plug-in hybrid grand tourer (or 2-door sports saloon) to be manufactured by the Swedish automobile manufacturer Koenigsegg.

In July 2024 Christian von Koenigsegg said that the three-cylinder powertrain using the Tiny Friendly Giant had been cancelled and the technology shelved for now.  An updated hot-V variant of the 5.0-litre twin-turbo HV8 from the Jesko, offered initially as a $400,000 option, would be the only option. The HV8 powertrain has a combined power output of 2300 PS and 2,750 N⋅m of torque when the engine runs on E85 fuel. The HV8 engine is mated to a 9-speed Light Speed Tourbillon Transmission (LSTT), a modified version of the 9-speed Light Speed Transmission found in the Jesko; while the I3 engine was mated to a direct drive (single-speed transmission).

Being the first all-wheel-drive model, the Gemera has all-wheel steering and torque vectoring. In line with other Koenigsegg models, the chassis has a carbon fibre monocoque with aluminium sub-structures. The car features electronically adjustable ride height and a titanium exhaust system manufactured by Akrapovič.

Gemera's I3 version has a claimed top speed of 400 km/h (249 mph), accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 1.9 seconds, with a top speed of 300 km/h in electric mode.

cc850

2024-now

The Koenigsegg CC850 is a limited production mid-engine sports car manufactured by Swedish automobile manufacturer Koenigsegg. It was unveiled on 19 August 2022 at Pebble Beach, California, as a homage to the CC8S. Built to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first production CC8S, the CC850 was originally limited to 50 units to celebrate the company founder Christian von Koenigsegg's 50th birthday, however, due to increased demand it was announced six days later on 25 August 2022 that an additional 20 units would be built.

Despite the similar name, the CC850 does not share any components with the original CC8S and is instead based on the Koenigsegg Jesko.

The engine is also borrowed from the Jesko, with smaller turbochargers, resulting in a power output of 1201 PS at 7800 rpm on regular fuel, or 1404 PS on E85. Peak torque stands at 1385 N⋅m  at 4800 rpm. The forged aluminium wheels (20" x 9.5" front, 21" 12.25" rear) are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (265/35R-20 front, and 325/30R-21 rear).  It can reach a top speed of 450–500 km/h and can do 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds.

chimera

2024

The Koenigsegg Chimera is a one-off mid-engine sports car manufactured by Swedish automobile manufacturer Koenigsegg. It was unveiled on 7 July 2024 at The Aurora in Båstad, Sweden for FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

The Koenigsegg Chimera is based on the Koenigsegg Agera RS chassis. It has the Koenigsegg Jesko engine and the Koenigsegg CC850 transmission. This car, like the Koenigsegg CCGT, is one of one manufactured car. The Chimera was used as a testing platform to develop the CC850 three years prior to the unveiling at The Aurora Concours.

The engine is the Jesko's 5.0-litre twin-turbo flat-plane crank V8 which does without a flywheel. Using 95-octane standard pump fuel it will output 1280 bhp, and 1600 bhp on E85 fuel.
